This episode we discuss girls and gaming. The plan was to have a mature discussion on this topic and to this end invited Grace along to talk with us. Turns out we just recorded an hour of smut. Balls and penis comments ensue. I apologise to sensitive people for this departure in our otherwise more tasteful programming...

Back From Brisbane!

Marty and I are back from GenCon Oz. We had an absolute blast and want to thank all the people that contributed to making it so great. this includes Ian Houlihan and his staff and fantastic volunteers, the GM's and other event organisers, the helpful booth operators, very friendly cosplayers and all the visitors who were keen to just talk, play and generally geek-out!

We did a heap of interviews (some really good ones, if we say so ourselves), brought home a metric-ton of games and toys, and made some awesome contacts. We met fans of the shows (even Catwoman had heard of us!), made new friends and had some truly disturbing encounters with pirates (Saturday was "Talk like a pirate day"!).

Next episode will be available early next week and we are planning to start sharing some of our interviews, though it will likely take a few episodes to get through them all. Expect to hear about Pathfinder, Ars Magica, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd Edition, cosplaying and costuming, fantasy coins, Monsterpocalypse, Pandemic, awesome game tables and heaps, heaps more!

Gen Con, Interviews and Girls in Gaming

Marty and I are busy getting ready for GenCon Oz (it's only days away!) and just wanted to keep you updated about what we are doing there.

Marty will be playing in a couple of Warmachine events and trying out a freeform for the very first time, a steampunk adventure called Flight of the Apollyon. I am very jealous that I will miss this - next time Gadget, next time...

I will be running games over at Indie Games On Demand (rumoured to be the COOLEST event running this year, with an amazing visual attraction to boot!). Sunday morning I will be on the panels of two seminars, War Stories (about publishing games) and Game Design Round Table (where it is hoped an exciting announcement will be made...).

Saturday morning we have lined up a couple of interviews with Steve Darlington (writer for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay) and Timothy Ferguson (writer for Ars Magica). We will also be stalking the halls for more interviews up until lunchtime - we want to talk to cosplayers, booth holders, volunteers and geeks of all persuasions. We are hoping to catch up with Jason Bulmahn and Keith Baker too!

Speaking of Steve Darlington, he has an event on Friday Night that was added too late to make it into the GenCon Oz event listings. At the 3 Hours To Midnight event You and Steve will work together to create a roleplaying game! It runs Friday, 7-10pm inSeminar Room 3. More details at Steve's GenCon Oz Blog.

While we will be doing lots of interviews (and taking plenty of photos) we are not sure whether we will get any episodes to air during GenCon. By the time we finish each day, we may not have access to the internet at the con, and we want to take the time to make sure the interviews sound their best before we share them, so we will see what happens.

We are very excited and look forward to meeting many of you!

On a completely unrelated note, we recieved a great email from d20 Sapphire (a mysterious name if ever I heard one!) telling us about her blog The 20 Sided Women Project. There are some great interviews and interesting posts up there and you should check it out.

This particular zine is dedicate to all the stuff we like - hobby games, RPG's, boardgames, dodgy movies and all that kind of stuff. Hello,

My name is Marty and I'm a gamer. I have been game free for... well, since the last time I slept, I suppose, tho I suspect I might even dream about gaming. I was ten when I first discovered gaming and I realised all those comic books and fantasy novels were just a primer for full-blown escapism and wild adventures.

My first taste of real gaming came when I was shown Warhammer Quest, a game where dastardly adventurers raid dungeons to relieve innocent monsters of their loot. I played a Halfling Thief and Imperial Noble and thus was born my enduring love of swashbuckling scoundrels and light-fingered, hungry midgets. From there I plunged into full-blown miniature combat, first with Warhammer, then Warhammer 40K, dabbling in a bit of Mordheim and Necromunda along the way. Since then I have discovered Privateer Press and their awesome steam-powered robots. From time-to-time computer games have grabbed my attention. Among them have been gems such as the Baldurs Gate and Neverwinter Nights series, the Half-Life saga, Bioshock, Fallout 3, the awesome Blood Bowl and the often over-looked The Witcher. Anything with a great story or interesting theme grabs me really. Recently I have been trying to branch out into other gaming, such as boardgames, card games and RPG's. Nathan seems to take evil delight in finding new stuff for me to try out.

I like to think I'm an active gamer. This doesn't mean that I use my figure cases for weight lifting (although I COULD do a serious workout - damn I got a lot of little men). What I mean is that I'm generally up for anything and like going to tournaments. I thoroughly enjoy learning to master new games and enjoy the challenges of tournament play. My one wish is that I had more time to paint all my mini's, but I guess if leaving them in their birthday suits means I get to actually play with them, so be it.

I call Nathan the "old man" of gaming. There is a reason for this, apart from stirring him. Firstly, 'ol Mr Russell worked at my local Games Workshop when I was just getting into the hobby and so has been my gaming crack dealer for almost fifteen year. The depth of his gamer knowledge never ceases to amaze me - and mildly scares me!

I love gaming and the seemingly endless options for fun times, adventures and friendships it offers. I see gaming and the gaming culture reaching a new era of growth and innovation (and widespread acceptance?) and can't wait to see what comes next. That's why I do Here Be Gamers!

Thanks to everyone for their feedback on the episode structure and website. We have recieved a heap of comments and emails on the topic and really appreciate it - it shows you care! We are still trying to strike the right balance between giving you an entertaining show in a format you like and being able to put the show out regularly. We haven't mastered it yet, but we are working on it!

What do you think of the current website? We think it is a happy medium for the moment between the old one that was plane, functional and hard to update and the "test" one that requires a little more expertise on our part before we commit!

Hey,

My name is Nathan and I am a writer, gamer and occassional mad dreamer. I have been gaming for a couple of decades now, much to the surprise of friends and family who thought I would "grow out of those games".

Marty calls me the "old guy", but I'm not much older than most of you (and probably a lot younger than some of you!). I was born the same year that Star Wars was unleashed on the world (the original, not that Episode 1 stuff!), which means I wasn't around when "original" D&D was concieved, but I cut my gaming teeth on D&D 2nd Ed, GDW games, Vampire: the Masquerade, Warhammer 40,000, Magic: the Gathering and Arnold Schwartzenegger movies. Being the "old guy" means I get to fondly recall the "good ol' days" and chastise Marty for playing too many computer games.

I love wargames but don't find a lot of time for them these days. With a couple of kids running around the house it is hard to set up a game or even do painting, but I try to keep up with what's going on in the industry. I have played everything from Warhammer to DBM, Wargods to Super System and a bunch of stuff in between. I even worked for Games Workshop for a couple of years. I really like systems that force you to make tough decisions, whether that is in force choice, deployment or actual play.

These days most of my gaming involves roleplaying and wargaming. RPG's, in partcular, are a passion of mine and I have... hundreds of different games. I just love to read the rules, see the different approaches designers take to character creation, combat and task resolution. Ever since I read my first Lester Smith review in Dragon magazine I have had a huge interest in small press games (fondly I remember Lost Souls, Fuzzy Heroes and Legend Quest). These days this interest manifests in a passion for "indie" games. I have even published a game myself, and designed a bunch more.

Gaming is an integral part of my life, providing opportunities for entertainment and escape, making new friends, learning new skills and having loads of fun. I love all kinds of games and I want to share my enthusiasm with everyone. That's why I do Here Be Gamers! I hope you enjoy the show!

This episode we have our very first guest, Riley, who talks with us about Dungeons and Dragons 4^th Edition. This episode concentrates almost exclusively on D&D, but we will be back to a wider discussion of topics next episode. Finally here... here be gamers, that is!

It took more than three weeks, but it appears that I have mastered this new-fangled technical computer stuff. I can even enter blog entries. Umm... Lets start again...

Welcome! Welcome to our humble podcast, where Marty and Nathan (that's me) will share their thoughts on tabletop games. We're Australian and live in Australia (incredible, isn't it?) - Newcastle specifically - so anything we talk about is going to be biased by our Antipodean simplicity. That's great news for Aussie listeners, because it means you have a homegrown podcast that talks about a great variety of things of interest to you. It's also pretty good news for those listeners unfortunate enough to not live in the Lucky Country (yes, Australians have the audacity to claim their's as the "lucky" country, I am not sure why, since you had to be pretty unlucky to score a bunk on the First Fleet way back in 1778, but I digress...). Why is it good news for you non-Aussie types? Because everyone loves listening to the drawl of the Aussie carrying on about goodness-knows-what for hour after hour... don't they?

Anyway, listen to the show and let us know what you think. We would appreciate any feedback. We apologise for the rediculous size of this first episode - it's only an hour long, but being new to this whole podcast thing I recorded in stereo then lost the original file so have no idea how to reduce the remaining mp3 to a smaller size. Obviously a rookie mistake - I have learnt my lesson and promise future episodes will be friendlier in download size!
