Episode 32 – Games Are On!
This episode we discuss the cancellation of GenCon Oz and (more importantly) the events that have risen in its place. I have been amazed by the community that has grown around this endeavour, working with each other to keep everyone in the loop in regards to what is happening, and in some instances joining together to bring events to the Brisbane scene on September 23-26.
We also discuss a few boardgames, Marty drools over the Dresden Files RPG that turned up this week, andgenerall “shoot the breeze” as we tend to do. We are joined by Grace and Duff, who help to make the show a barrell of fun for everyone (even if it is at our expense!).

Hey great episode guys, nice to hear thee are plenty of gen-con substitutes happening, looking forward to hearing more on those next time. You make some excellent points about the timing/organization of gen-con I really couldn’t agree more, such a shame really.
The guest stars were entertaining and vampyre story sounds interesting (I’m a huge fan of the point and click)I have been enjoying Sam and Max, I will have to check this one out also.
Keep up the great work, I look forward to the next fantasy craft update!!
I have to say that this was a great episode. While the topic (Gencon Oz) might not have been on my radar, the addition of two new voices really added a dynamic to the cast.
Keep up the great work!
Marcus
Oh great, people like Duff and Grace. For goodness sake, nobody tell them!
I thought that the WOTC people had a play area for D&D in 2009 as well as 2008. Was it just a bit smaller?
(And I’m sure it’s just a fling that the listeners like Duff and Grace. You’re our first love, honestly.)
Sorry for all australian fans that their GenCon was cancelled. It seems that cons and exposition are partly not that important anymore in the age of globalization and broadband internet. You can read about new things almost immediately on the web, see photos and watch videos or play some demoversion only days/weeks later (examples esp. for IT/video games). So I guess the remaining thing for non-professional visitors is the, eh, meta-experience: Meeting people with the same interests. And that’s not very commercial.
I personally only visited RPG cons two or three times, usually because I had a group of players who don’t really were open to new games or I had no groups. So why visit such cons to see games I won’t play in the near future? Then I was participating for years at a movie festival, in times before the p2p hype. And because such movies are usually not shown on the big screen. The last years then I went to Germany’s gamescom (Games Convention in the past), mainly because of the atmosphere. Sure, you could play new video and PC games, but it’s all crowded and not very often very hot new shit, hehe.
I’m glad you guys liked the extra voices! I’m usually around when the recording is going on so I might try and convince the boys to let me on more often
! Thanks for the compliments! (and yes Nathan I now know they like me MWAHAHAHA!)
Uprising now has a website for information and plenty of links for the associated events. http://acecomics.com.au/events/uprising2010/
Thanks for another great Ep. Another Grace fan here.
Interestingly I just heard Tom Vassel really pan Mad Zepplin…
I’m going to have a table setup at Uprising to teach people how to play Heroscape, so if you have 10 minutes between games come find me and I’ll show you what it’s all about.
P.s. loved the show.
Disclamer – this is for Saturday only (Doubt my wife would let me out for 2 days straight)
Great, now Grace has “fans”! This isn’t gonna end well.
Chris, I can see how Mad Zeppelin isn’t for everyone, it isn’t without it’s faults (I can see it becoming a bit predictable after a lot of play), but we are enjoying it at the moment. I have found a few games that I have enjoyed but Tom Vassal has rated pretty low – different strokes for different folks, I suppose!
Ok so I JUST got my copy of Dresden yesterday……dam well took it’s time. But BOY is it nice looking (except for the cover art ). I can see you guys weren’t exaggerating on the size of this book. It’s quite a bit to go through but I REALLY like the mechanics. Can’t wait to go through it more carefully.
With all of the talk about Gen Con OZ, is there an opportunity for an interview with the “Here Be Gamers” so that we may give our side of the story, plus the opportunity for people to be able to ask questions of us.
Hi Ian, I have sent you an email.
